The overall objective of the AFNSD is to provide a stakeholder platform and leadership at all levels, and to facilitate discussions between governments, civil society, the private sector, the scientific community, farmers and development partners.
On the occasion of the Nelson Mandela International Day observed on 18 July, the African Union wishes to join the rest of the world in congratulating Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on his 93rd birthday.
The UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the ECA, Mr. Janneh called for sustained youth mobilization “to get out the message of sustainable development, as they have the greatest stake in the future sustainability of our planet”.
As we celebrate this day, let us take this opportunity to reflect on the boldness, courage and determination of the youths of Soweto 35 years ago vis-à-vis the current youthful generation of our continent today.
In thinking about ‘Africa Day’ and indeed the related theme for this year it is clear that we should all use this Day to take stock of our achievements and to genuinely re-focus our energies on addressing the challenges that we are faced with as Africans.
