Dear partners and stakeholders of the NEPAD Agency
A philosophy for Africa’s renaissance, a strategy for the continent’s emergence and a development programme of the African Union (AU), the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is celebrating its Tenth Anniversary this year, in July 2011.
What a distance covered so far!
For NEPAD, 2010 was very crucial.
Crucial, above all, because it finally saw the successful finalization of the long process that has transformed the former NEPAD Secretariat into the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency. The NEPAD Agency is now fully integrated in the African Union’s structures and processes. It is also endowed with a pragmatic development.
The Decision (Assembly/AU/Dec.283-XIV) taken by the Heads of State and Government at the 14th Ordinary Summit which endorsed this integration, also gave NEPAD additional tools for a more diligent management of its projects and programmes.
Moreover, the decision is embedded with important implications at both administrative and programmatic levels
At the administrative level, the NEPAD Agency now becomes an Organ of the African Union, based in Midrand in South Africa, with diplomatic benefits and immunities.
At the level of programmes, the NEPAD Agency has embarked on a strategic reorientation that is based on themes are focused on concrete results. These themes are in the areas of regional integration and infrastructure development, agriculture and food security, economic and corporate Governance, climate change and natural resources management, human development and other cross-cutting issues in particular, Gender, capacity building and the use of ICT applications.
This breakthrough could not have been achieved without your support, partners and stakeholders of the NEPAD. Kindly accept our sincere gratitude for this support.
This occasion offers me the opportunity to pay tribute to the crucial contribution of the NEPAD’s Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) as well as the tremendous support of Mr. Jean PING, Chairperson of the African Union Commission who exercises’ supervisory authority over the Agency.
Today, we can now assert that the NEPAD is at the crossroads of its development. New perspectives are available and NEPAD has presently embarked on an implementation process, a feat highly desired by all the friends of Africa as well as by the youth of the continent.
For all of us, Regional Economic Communities, Civil Society, bilateral and multilateral development partners, private sector and citizens, it is time to strengthen our constructive synergies, in order to turn into reality, once and for all, the NEPAD’s vision as defined by its founding fathers and in order to place Africa on the path of sustainable development.
For my part, I will ensure, through our regularly updated Blog, that you are all kept abreast with the projects and challenges that we are all called upon to undertake and overcome.
In this regard, your questions and suggestions are highly welcome which you can send to the following email address:
I wish to end by once more extending to you all, my best wishes of good health and prosperity for the year 2011.
*Very soon, the NEPAD Agency will inform you of activities that will be carried out within the framework of the celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the NEPAD throughout the continent and in the Diaspora.
