Midrand, 12/5/2011 – Speaking at the joint NEPAD Agency and Pan-African Parliament meeting which was held last week at the NEPAD Agency, Dr. Ibrahim Assane Mayaki, CEO of the NEPAD Agency called for the deepening of partnerships between the two bodies of the African Union.
In his remarks, Dr. Mayaki explicitly called for the establishment of a joint NEPAD-PAP Steering Committee that would provide necessary technical back-stopping in strengthening the role of Parliamentarians in support of NEPAD programmes and projects. Beyond this, the Committee would also be tasked to look at how both organisations can push for reforms that can enhance socio-economic transformation at the national and regional levels.
Dr. Idriss Ndele Moussa, the President of PAP, emphasied PAP’s important role in supporting continental development and the potential role that PAP can play in NEPAD programmes.
“If PAP could have been the legislative body of a country, the NEPAD Agency would then be the Ministry of Planning. This is why our two institutions must work closely together. Hand in hand”, he explained.
As the legislative body of the AU, PAP is tasked to act as a common platform for all the people of Africa and their grassroots organisations - to get more involved in discussions and decision-making on the problems and challenges that are facing Africa.
