What's on this page?
On this page you will find information on NEPAD's energy programme, including aims, progress and achievements to date.
What is the NEPAD energy programme?
Energy infrastructure is a key driver for economic growth. NEPAD's energy programme strives to improve energy generation and access across the continent.
Aims and objectives.
The energy programme works in a number of key areas to promote and enable a well regulated energy environment and increase capacity. These areas include: generation, transmission, renewable energy and gas pipelines.
Priority areas for NEPAD's energy programme include biofuel energy, solar thermal power generation, cross border energy trade and communication mechanisms between main energy stakeholders. In particular, the programme supports development of power generation from natural gases and coal bed methane. It also supports geothermal power generation in East Africa.
The programme also works to improve tariffs and regulations in an effort to develop and enhance cross border energy trade on the continent.
What progress has been made so far?
NEPAD's energy programme lists a number of key achievements to date. These include:
- The programme has captured comprehensive data on the current state of energy projects across the continent from which is has prepared a list of priority projects;
- NEPAD's Bioenergy Programme has been recognised as a multi-sectoral programme that cuts across the energy, environment, agriculture, and science and technology sectors;
- The programme has enhanced capacity by building partnerships with institutions such as the Power Institute for East and Southern Africa (PIESA). The programme has also initiated a public-private partnership (PPP) capacity building programme within the NEPAD-OECD framework;
- The programme has provided advocacy to promote the involvement of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in electricity business, especially in the use of renewable sources.
The use of renewable energy has been promoted in several high level global forums. These efforts resulted in the inclusion of renewable energy sources as part of the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA).
