About 10 million young Africans arrive each year on the labour market. Africa Day celebrates the day when the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union, was formed in 1963 on 25 May. It acknowledges the progress made by Africans while reflecting upon the common challenges we face in a global environment. It is for this reason that even as the continent faces the challenges of integration and industrialisation, many are the innovations that young enterprising Africans are developing to redress development challenges on the continent.
This year, the NEPAD Agency commemorates Africa Day in collaboration with The Innovation Hub in Tshwane, South Africa, to celebrate some of the innovations that entrepreneurs on the continent are developing. This is in line with the 2017 AU theme on Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in Youth.
The commemoration of Africa Day at The Innovation Hub will showcase innovations by entrepreneurs in bioeconomy (including agro-processing and health), climate change adaptive innovations and smart industries (ICTs and advanced manufacturing).
Date: 24 May
Venue: The Innovation Hub, SAPPI Building, Pretoria
