This year, International Women’s Day comes on the heels of an unprecedented global movement for women’s rights, equality and justice. This has taken the form of global marches and campaigns on issues ranging from sexual harassment and women’s rights to protection, equal pay and women’s political representation, among others.
The NEPAD Agency’s ethos is that gender concerns and women’s empowerment objectives must form an integral part of the development agenda if stakeholders are to make significant strides towards equitable and sustainable growth and human centred development.
Indeed International Women’s Day is one of the most important days for us on the African continent, as we continue to build #TheAfricaWeWant with our women and girls, leaving no one behind.
Together with the women on our continent, through Agenda 2063, Africa’s transformative strategy, we are confident that we shall see an Africa where development is people-driven, unleashing the potential of its Women and Youth!
As the implementation agency of the African Union, NEPAD continues to work through its Gender Programme to strengthen African institutions and organisations, including grassroots women organisations, to play a catalytic role in accelerating the attainment of a prosperous peaceful and secure African continent, in which its daughters and sons will fully enjoy and participate in the creation of a better future for all.
We continue to #PressforProgress even though we do realise that gender parity may still be a long way off, both on and beyond the continent of Africa.
However, the bright side shows that all across our continent, positive gains are still being made day by day in attaining parity. Indeed, both women and men alike are showing more and more support through activism and advocacy. We therefore urge each and every person to play their part, whether big or small, in winning gains towards gender parity.
We would like to wish all the women on our continent and beyond, happy International Women’s Day!
