The NEPAD Planning and Coordination Agency (NPCA) and the Republic of Benin, together with the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), are organizing the first Africa Rural Development Forum (ARDF) within the context of the Rural Futures Programme. This forum is taking place from 2-4 May 2013, in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, under the theme “Sustainable Rural Transformation Agenda for Africa”.
The ARDF is a continuation of series of strategic high-level dialogues and consultations at regional, continental and global level around rural transformation and development by the NEPAD Agency. The ARDF will seek to provide an opportunity to share lessons within Africa and to learn lessons from other countries where focused efforts in support of rural transformation have been put in place. The Forum will share best practices of policy coordination across different sectors and agencies, as well as between different levels of government with the aim of developing more effective and efficient means of rural service provision, which meets the particular needs for rural areas.
The forum will also examine the role of agricultural growth as a driver of the diversification process and diversification of the rural economy beyond agriculture as a key feature of rural transformation. The following thematic areas for the forum include:
1. Political Economy of Rural Transformation
2. Territorial Planning/multisectoriality
3. Job creation/productivity/social mobility
4. Informal Sector
5. Environmental Sustainability
Participants will be drawn from High-level government officials; departments of rural development; public agencies involved with rural development; private sector companies; farmers organisations; Civil Society Organisations (CSOs); academic research development practitioners; rural and district councils, and development agencies.
