Addis Ababa, Jan. 31 – Benin Republic President Yayi Boni emerged as the new Chairperson of the African Union. He replaced Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo whose one-year tenure has ended.
Mr. Boni’s appointment was one of the highlights of the 18th AU Summit which ended in Addis Ababa on Jan. 30. In a speech, the new Chairperson called on fellow African leaders to strive for stability, security, reinforce continental integration, and promote infrastructure development in order to win the fight against poverty.
