What is the transport sector-programme?
The goal of the NEPAD Transport programme is to close Africa's gap in transport infrastructure systems and services by:
- Reducing the costs of transport and improving the quality of services;
- Increasing both public and private financial investment in transport infrastructure;
- Improving the maintenance of transport infrastructure;
- Removing formal and informal (physical and non-physical) barriers to the movements of peoples, goods and services;
- Supporting regional cooperation and the integration of markets for transport services; and
- Improving the safety of all transport modes (air, land, rail, sea and pipeline).
What is happening in the transport programme?
In the area of transport the programme focuses on the co-ordination and facilitation of transport infrastructure projects in all modes of transport, including roads, rail, sea, air and pipeline. This work includes:
- Identifying major transport corridors with a view to transforming them into viable development initiatives.
- Facilitation by the agency to unblock barriers to transport infrastructure project development.
- Using the NEPAD Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (IPPF) instrument for transport infrastructure.
- Promoting innovative approaches for the effective implementation of the Yamoussoukro Decision.
What progress has been made so far?
- The first ever NEPAD Transport Summit was held in South Africa from the 25th to the 26th of November 2009. The summit was aimed at finding ways in which to prioritise, develop and fast-track Africa's cross-border networks in all forms of transport - road, rail, air and sea ports - to promote trade, investment and growth through the integration of national action plans and national economies.

- The transport programme has come up with a concept to implement the Yamoussoukro Decision on the liberalisation of air transport in Africa.
- The agency is also working with Afrique Rail and the South African government to identify and promote regional rail improvement.
