Free training across the energy spectrum
The IEA is pleased to announce that it is opening its doors for a week of free* training on energy specifically aimed at professionals in developing countries and emerging economies.
Learn directly from IEA experts: Over the course of five intensive days, participants will take part in a mixture of highly focussed lectures and hands-on exercises, thereby becoming familiar with the theory behind and the application of the IEA’s internationally recognised models and tools. All courses will be highly interactive, allowing participants to engage directly with IEA experts and to exchange knowledge and experience with peers from many other countries. The event will also offer many opportunities for informal networking.
Choose from five thematic courses**: a diverse and integrated programme has been designed for each course covering the latest developments and best practices. There is an opportunity to focus on energy markets, policy, technology, sustainability or analysis, or to experience a mixture of the “hot topics” of the energy world. Two of the courses give special attention to natural gas as a strategic fuel for the future. See individual course descriptions below.
The training week, which will be held at the IEA headquarters in Paris, targets government officials and private sector experts from non-IEA countries and is designed to accommodate 100 participants.
*Attendance is free of charge. Participants must cover their own travel and accommodation costs. Limited financial assistance is available from the IEA.
** All courses will be in English (no interpretation in another language will be provided)

| Low Carbon Technology Policy and Planning (focus on technology deployment roadmaps) |
This theme will explore the key principles of policy formulation for low-carbon energy technology deployment. It focuses on the IEA’s unique expertise developing energy technology roadmaps – a tool that encompasses the policy objectives, stakeholder engagement, and financial arrangements needed to support a particular technology. Both renewable energy solutions and fossil fuel technologies are covered. A strong emphasis is given to practical skills – participants will develop two technology roadmaps and undertake exercises on grid integration of renewables.
This course is suitable for professionals with a background in energy technology policy, renewable energy, and carbon capture and storage, and some substantial work experience in any of these areas. The training will benefit both relevant government officials and experts from the private sector.

| Energy Analysis and Modelling (focus on methods and tools) |
A close look is given to a range of practical IEA energy analysis applications – from developing energy performance indicators to modelling a national power generation portfolio. Participants are introduced to the fundamental principles of energy analysis and modelling and then receive hands-on training on using tools such as the international MARKAL/TIMES power optimisation model. Analysis at the national level, as well as by sector of the economy, are explored from both short and long-term perspectives. Computer-based exercises are included.
This course is suitable for energy policy analysts and modellers dealing with energy performance indicators, fuel mix analysis, scenario development and power generation planning (some work experience in this area is required). The training will benefit employees in government departments and private sector companies involved in energy analysis and modelling.
