Africa is the only continent where the number of undernourished people is increasing with there being now over 230 million, meaning that one person out of five does not have an adequate amount of food. While Asia has succeeded in reducing its prevalence of childhood stunting from 49% in 1990 to 28% in 2010, there are several African countries where more than 40% of children today are stunted. In addition to the chronic malnutrition, Africa is vulnerable and prone to sudden shocks—recently a large number of people have to rely on emergency food assistance due to a series of natural disasters.
