Republic of Kenya and Uganda

Amount: € 153,846.00

Overview

The Centre for Land, Economy and Rights of Women (CLEAR) is committed to setting up a centre of excellence addressing social and economic justice, working with landless people, marginalised farmers, especially women to improve female livelihoods through secure and equitable access, utilisation and benefits from land-based resources. Operationally, CLEAR’s work is anchored on influencing policy, research, advocacy and networking, and capacity building on women’s land rights. The main project objectives were to link up with 3 similar initiatives in Uganda and Kenya and to build an enabling environment for the formulation and implementation of gender sensitive land policies, laws and structures, necessary for the eradication of poverty and promotion of sustainable livelihoods in Africa.

Key results

CLEAR implemented 3 pilot projects that were focused on in this project all had significant components addressing agriculture and agro-processing.

  • In the Mbale district in Uganda seed banks were established for farmers as well as educational initiatives to increase productivity. Similar education initiatives were implemented with the Bar K’Obala and Kyani women’s Groups in Kenya, while also providing an exchange program with the Mbale women, where expertise and trading cooperatives were established.
  • These initiatives provided a significant boost to the agricultural output for the beneficiaries involved.
