CREDO-ACTION Togo

Support for Women in the Marketing of Agricultural Products

Togolese Republic

Amount: € 53,193.00

Overview

The aim of the CREDO-ACTION project was to assist women in 6 rural villages from Togo to organise themselves into groups to initiate income-generating activities. Agriculture, in which just under half of women participate, remains sensitive to climate and social conditions. To cope with these subsistence and survival difficulties, the beneficiaries were organised into cooperatives thereby mitigating their exposure to the vagaries of subsistence farming. The project thus addressed the aspirations set out in the African Union’s Agenda 2063, of a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development, as well as an Africa whose development is people-driven, especially relying on the potential offered by its youth and women.

Key results

  • The project offered assistance and advice towards the formation of cooperatives, together with documentation; 12 cooperatives were formed and meet regularly.
  • These cooperatives also provided a platform for discussing the benefits that might arise from pursuing new commercial strategies for growing and marketing agricultural products, and investigating the role of credit and credit providers in enabling small businesses to develop.
  • Training in business skills was also offered through the medium of 4 workshops. 3 shops for the sale of produce have been constructed.
