African Gender Forum and Award

Republic of Senegal

Amount: € 70,000.00

Overview

The second African Gender Forum, organised by FAS Senegal (Femmes Afrique Solidarité-Sénégal) in Senegal from 10 to 12 December 2007, was designed as an opportunity for knowledge exchange and open dialogue, with the aim of harmonising, strategizing and emphasising the actions of women’s networks on the African continent. The Forum gathered African women, and women from other continents, to share their experiences and lessons on critical issues women currently face. The forum took into account the economic, social, political and gender perspectives of the attendees, thus adding greater insight to the initiatives undertaken by African women's networks. Furthermore, the forum helped to facilitate enhanced collaboration between women’s networks on the continent.

Key results

  • The African Gender Forum of 2007, attended by 150 female delegates, met in Senegal. The Forum aimed to provide expertise in decision making processes related to migration issues.
  • The Forum was used to scale advocacy efforts in order to ensure that the young generation in Africa and migrants are provided with nurturing conditions and opportunities to initiate projects and see them through.
  • Forum advocated for women to be a required component in advising and monitoring the implementation of the various African and Western government policies and reports that promote reforms regarding migration policies and gender mainstreaming.
