JOFA (Jewels of Faith Academy)

Borehole Water Project

Federal Republic of Nigeria

Amount: € 39,350.40

Overview

The Jewels of Faith Academy, JOFA mandate is to provide education and humanitarian services to Nigerian women. Their objectives within the Kpaduma community in Abuja, Nigeria were to provide safe drinking water in order to reduce the prevalence of water borne diseases and to empower the less privileged. JOFA has provided literacy and life skills training for over a decade but has always lacked adequate financial and human resources. The funding provided by the NEPAD Spanish Fund for African Women Empowerment allowed the organisation to undertake the construction of 4 boreholes and provide microfinancing for women.

Key results

  • The construction of the 4 boreholes by JOFA empowered over 6000 women by reducing the burden of walking long distances to fetch water and freed up their time to attend adult literacy programmes and explore other income generating activities.
  • 30 women from Kpaduma, Abuja in Nigeria were provided with microfinancing to establish small businesses. It was hoped that the seed money would be used to start income generating activities which the women could use to meet their transportation costs to the JOFA Learning Centres.
