Overview

This project initiated by the Women’s Network of Tanganyika (REFETANG), based in the Democratic Republic of Congo, consisted of improving its institutional capacity by acquiring premises, a vehicle, computer and other ICT equipment, office equipment and supplies as well as generating publicity materials. The project also acquired 20 mobile phones to assist with communication and a generator to ensure stable power. Income-generating activities were implemented for self-financing and for the support of self-help groups for vulnerable women. The project also included training in grass-roots leadership and good governance

Key results

REFETANG empowered vendors in local markets and inhabitants of communities with information and training on aspects such as the revision of the electoral register, the enfranchisement of women, decentralization, good governance and HIV/AIDS education. To assist with income generation, 40 women were empowered with dressmaking skills, 5 hectares of arable land was purchased in Kalemie for use by the community and cassava and corn was planted in Kilela.
