Ambassador of Russia and Dr Mayaki hold follow up talks on BRICS

Russia’s Ambassador to South Africa, His Excellency Mikhail Ivanovich Petrakov, met with NEPAD CEO Dr Ibrahim Mayaki at the Agency’s headquarters in Midrand, South Africa, as a follow up to outcomes of the BICS Summit last month.

BRICS is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – countries which make up the body of the world’s largest emerging economies. The first BRICS Summit to be held in Africa took place in Durban won March 26 and 27.

Dr Mayaki briefed the Ambassador Ivanovich on NEPAD and the progress being made in the implementation of its Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA).  He also said that the Summit provided an excellent opportunity for NEPAD to engage with the BRICS and to elaborate on areas for collaboration between Africa and the grouping.image

PIDA is Africa’s main infrastructure initiative, aimed at accelerating the delivery of regional and continental projects in Transport, Energy, Trans-boundary waters, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Ambassador Petrakov welcomed the greater collaboration and knowledge exchange between Europe-Asia and Africa, so as to advance regional integration and better connect the Continents.

Russia will chair the BRICS group in 2015.
