Every year the International Women’s Day provides a good occasion to reflect on the situation of women globally, both past and present. As we all commemorate International Women’s Day, we join the people of the world in celebration of the progress made for women’s rights, women’s empowerment and gender equality.
The struggle for women’s rights has always required incredible courage. The wielding of power continues to swing unequally around the world, particularly in nations where girls and women lack fundamental legal and human rights. There is, therefore, need for all of us to continue working to empower women and girls towards unlocking their potential to ensure sustainable development and inclusive growth. As we celebrate the decision of the African Union to dedicate this year, 2014 to agriculture and food security, let us not miss the opportunity to address the fundamental gender gaps women small scale holders are faced with for the achievement of sustained food and nutrition security, growth and human development for all.
Today, we acknowledge and appreciate the commitment and dedication of the women in the NEPAD Agency, and we celebrate them on this special day. We appreciate their contributions to achieving the mandate of the NEPAD Agency.
The message of International Women’s Day remains both relevant and urgent. Even as we celebrate this day, we also recommit ourselves to working harder for gender equality, women’s empowerment and inclusive growth. We all need to celebrate the progress we have made, and keep working until all women are safe, proud and prosperous.
Happy International Women’s Day
