STC Adopts African Union Development Agency-NEPAD Statute

Cairo, May 6, 2019 - On May 6, the Specialised Technical Committee (STC) on Justice and Legal Affairs formally adopted the statute and rules of procedure of the African  Union Development Agency-NEPAD in Cairo, Egypt.

This follows the historic decision that was taken at the 31st Ordinary Session of the  Assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government in Nouakchott, Mauritania, July-2018, to transform the NEPAD Planning and Coordination Agency (NPCA) into the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD).

The AU Assembly of July 2018 approved the establishment of AUDA-NEPAD as the technical agency of the African Union, with its own legal identity, defined by its own  statute, to deliver on the continent’s development priorities.

The results of the STC on Justice and Legal Affairs will be submitted to the First Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union and the Regional Economic Communities scheduled for Niger in July this year.

According to the CEO of AUDA-NEPAD Dr Ibrahim Mayaki, the current reforms respond to the need to streamline and improve the effectiveness and efficiency in the implementation of AU decisions, policies and programmes through all its organs and institutions.

While in Egypt, Dr Mayaki had the honour of meeting President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, current Chairperson of the AU.

Following the meeting, Dr Mayaki said, “President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has a very clear view of what the new AUDA-NEPAD should focus on and how it should deliver on its mandate.”
